Google’s gift for Christmas, “Teach Parents Tech” aims to offer basic, straightforward, and helpful tech advice to clueless moms and dads around the world.
Teaching parents anything is a …
Teaching parents anything is a scary thought and teaching your parents technology? Well, that just sounds impossible!
But when Google’s here, there’s no fear. Adding another feather to its hat, Google has come up with a new website called Teach Parents Tech that helps younger generations demonstrate basic computer operations and skills to their parents or older relatives.
The actual website www.teachparentstech.org isn’t public yet, but Google has already begun posting a series of tutorial videos onto YouTube under the “Teach Parents Tech” umbrella.
There are around 54 brief (less than a minute) how-to videos covering topics as simple as “How to resize a picture,” “how to copy and paste,” and as diverse as, “Check your email on your Android phone”, “How to find cheap flights” and “How to find a pizza restaurant near you” etc. Google has given a human touch to all the videos by starting them off with a different Google Geek in front of the camera. The tutorial videos can also be sent in an email through the web form on the website.
A very friendly-looking site, built like a form letter, with an opening that goes "I'm really shocked\impressed\worried\jazzed that you've started using your computer these days". You can then select any number of videos to send from five different categories, including The Basics, Media, Finding Information, etc.
It's a free service to use, with a promise from Google of free delivery of real “tech support care” packages to the first 10,000 individuals within the U.S. who will send packages online.
It seems like a noble idea, as long as you can get your parents to their email to see the videos. It might not solve all the issues your loved ones are having, but at least it’ll ease your pain and prevent you from having to explain the simpler tasks over and over again.
Must say the parents are lucky to have a fun teacher like Google!
